New course at Hospitalfield

Angus College is to become Hospitalfield’s first “Corporate Friend” at a ceremony on Tuesday 8 June. As a corporate member, the College will join the 100 individual Founding Friends of Hospitalfield who have signed up since the launch in March this year by Director of the V & A Sir Mark Jones. And minutes after the formal signing, the College will use Hospitalfield as the launch venue for their newest art qualification – an HND Contemporary Art Practice.

The one year course, which is already fully subscribed, attracted applications from more than twice its complement, and will start in September. A dozen promising art and design students from throughout Angus will develop their talents under the professional tuition of College staff with access to Hospitalfield studios, house and the artists resident there as appropriate. Many of those who have signed up for the course are already studying art & design at HNC level at the college.

The house whose history exemplifies many aspects of the Scottish Arts and Crafts Movement, has been an inspiration to six generations of Scottish artists including Joan Eardley, Peter Howson and Will Maclean and regularly hosts artists residencies from the UK and abroad.
Chair of Hospitalfield Trust Kenneth Cargill said: “We are pleased to welcome Angus College as our first Corporate Friend and we look forward to announcing further initiatives together. Hospitalfield has recently developed an enhanced role within Further Education and has been identified by colleges throughout Scotland as the centre for a new forum focussing on education and the creative industries. Hospitalfield has some of Scotland’s most stunning examples of fine craftsmanship and stonemasonry which we would like to see inspiring new generations not just of artists but also those working in traditional crafts and trades.”

Principal of Angus College John Burt said “We are delighted to be the first ‘Corporate Friend’ of Hospitalfield and we see this as strengthening the bond between our two organisations both of which play a key role both locally and nationally. It is fitting that our new HND Contemporary Art Practice is formally launched here and we sincerely hope that our new HND students will get a chance to experience everything that Hospitalfield has to offer throughout the duration of their studies.”
