Get Set Go Awards Ceremony
Participants in Angus College’s Get Set Go programme were celebrating today at a ceremony which marked their achievements. The group of ten who undertook the 12 week course were able to develop their skills in areas including motivation, self awareness and problem solving through adventure sports activities.
The programme began as a collaboration between Angus College’s Employability team and Criminal Justice Services who suggested developing a programme which would use sport as a vehicle to foster positive behaviours. The College’s Sport and Fitness team were recruited to help develop the programme and create physical tasks and activities which would support and develop the core skills beneficial to creating more positive prospects.
The candidates who took part in the course were referred from various different backgrounds and were selected because of the barriers which they faced in gaining employment. Many of the candidates had also found themselves beginning to loose hope in finding a more positive future. The course aimed to turn this around and has ended with some very positive outcomes with three of the participants have gained fulltime employment already.
One member of the group has also found the confidence to achieve his ambition of attending university and will be starting in September. The remainder of the ground are now in supported work placements or sector specific training programmes.
Get Set Go received funding from the Tayside Wider Access Forum in order to launch the project and has since then continued to develop support of practitioners and agencies throughout the Angus area. Amongst these partners are organisations including Augment, Jobcentre Plus, Right Track 18-21, Tayside Substance Misuse Services, Progress to Work and Angus Volunteer Centre.
Angus College Vocational Skills tutor Jim McEvoy who worked on developing the course said “The Get Set Go programme has been a great success and has had some really positive outcomes for the participants. I am hopeful that we can run this programme again soon to benefit more individuals who face barriers in their current situations.”
