Student Health Tops the Agenda
As incidents of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies among young people continue to present a problem, staff at Angus College, Dundee College and The Web Project have been training on how to support and educate young people.
Since 1996 sexual health issues among young people have steadily risen in Scotland and with each of these organisations being dedicated to promoting positive health and wellbeing in young people, it made sense to come together to improve the situation.
NHS sexual Health Promotion Specialist, Richard McIntosh, has been involved in offering condom distribution training.
“It can clearly be a delicate and sensitive subject, but my aim is to train students to offer practical and emotional advice in the most sensitive way possible. The C-Card is a plastic card which allows the owner to collect free condoms and other safer sex products in the C-card range but it also reinforces the need to respect yourself and others.”
Student Key worker, Liz Martin says “we spend a lot of time with these students and it helps enormously for us to have a training framework to work to when we’re presented with a difficult situation. The more we can lower the barriers surrounding these problems then the more we can help these young people.”
All three organisations will roll out training this year and provide free contraception to young people who are signed up to the scheme. They will also be promoting the latest NHS schemes to promote safe sexual health for the young, including the mobile app “Need to Know” which allows them to access information on their phones or tablets and the mobile site “Cool 2 Talk”, which encourages them to be more open with trusted confidents if they have a pressing problem.
