College unveils State of Art Classrooms
Current and former students from Angus College’s award winning Social Science Department gathered to celebrate the opening of State of the Art accommodation.
Depute principal, Jackie Howie cut the ribbon to mark the beginning of a new era in social science teaching at the College in two refurbished rooms specifically designed to deliver cooperative learning to diverse groups. Cooperative learning is a teaching methodology which is all about using diversity of groups as a benefit not a problem, and which fosters both creativity and independent learning which is a perfect way of delivering Curriculum for Excellence and giving students the skills and attributes required for a modern global society.
Course leader, Cherry Hopton says it heralds the start of a refreshed curriculum across Social Sciences, including criminology, sociology of the city, social control, popular culture and Scottish history using diverse assessment methods such as filmmaking with local film maker Ross Bull.
Cherry says “when I first arrived at Angus College, Social Science was taught in a portacabin. Now our expertise in Cooperative Learning is being recognised with improved accommodation which will see us well into the future as the newly merged Dundee and Angus College. It’s a fantastic step forward!”.
