Higher History - Evening

Who is this course aimed at?

The Higher History increases learners’ understanding of their society by helping them to appreciate how important aspects of that society have developed in the past. Learners are encouraged to take a more independent responsibility for their learning, while they develop skills in analysing complex events, structuring reasoned arguments, and presenting clear and balanced conclusions.

They evaluate sources across a breadth of Scottish, British and European history, and participate in debate, developing democratic attitudes of open-mindedness and tolerance.

What entry requirements will I need?

Candidates would normally be expected to have attained one of the following or equivalent:

• Standard Grade History or other social subject at Grade 1 or 2

• an Intermediate 2 course or unit(s) in History

• a course or unit(s) at Intermediate 2 in another social subject

• Appropriate life experience and skills in keeping with higher level study, to be assessed at interview stage

Start date: 27 August 2013 – one evening per week (Tuesday 6.30-9pm) in Arbroath. Course duration: 36 weeks

What will I study on this course?

Three units at SCQF Level 6 are:

Britain 1851-1951

A study of the development of the United Kingdom into a modern democracy and the development of the role of the state in the welfare of its citizens, illustrating the themes of authority, ideology and rights.

The Impact of the Great War, 1914-28

A study of conflict and its political, social, economic and cultural effects, illustrating the themes of conflict, change and identity.

USA, 1918-68

A study of the growing tensions in American society, focusing on racial divisions, economic difficulties, the growth of federal powers and the struggle for civil rights, illustrating the themes of ideology, identity and rights.

Job and progression routes?

This course or its units may provide progression to Advanced Higher History or other subjects at Advanced Higher, a Higher National programme in Social Sciences, a higher education course or training/employment.
