Student Association

All students, full-time and part-time, are eligible to be a member of the Students' Association, and via this route can become a member of the NUS.

By producing a recent passport type photograph and paying a small fee, any student can get an NUS card which entitles the holder to obtain discounts in some local and national shops and on some transport routes.

During your first month at College all students will be invited to elect a Team Representative(s). These students will become members of the Student Representative Council which meets once each month. From this group an Executive Committee of 8-10 members will be elected.

Getting involved with your Association can open up a new world to you. The Association sends members to meetinggs and conferences throughout the UK. This is beneficial in many ways as certificates are achieved at conferences and students can gain experience and employable skills in this way. The opportunity to meet other like-minded people and form friendships also arises.

What does the SA do?

The Students' Association has various functions. It helps students who may have problems with finance, welfare, etc, and is one of the links between the student and College Management. In some cases the Students' Association may also be able to arbitrate on behalf of a student who has a particular problem. It also organises social and fund raising events, and helps classes or groups to go on field trips.

The Students' Association base is located in the Isla Building. Once the Executive Committee is elected the room will be staffed over lunchtimes. The Students' Association works in close contact with the Student Services Team and any queries about the Students' Association can be directed to them.

There are two ways to become actively involved with the Association

  • There is the direct approach: attend monthly meetings; have hands-on experience within the Association; choose roles to suit you - in the public eye - or working behind the curtains; in effect YOU can play an important role in the College.

  • You can become a Class Rep. This gives a much more informal feel and allows reps to represent their class members - as well as bringing grievances to the Student's Association meetings to allow us to be aware of them - and, if possible, help sort them out.

Class Reps

Class Representatives are very important to the running of the Students' Assciation - they are your voice and direct means of communication to and from the Association.

Each Class is required to appoint a Class Rep, full training for Class Reps is being organised for mid Septermber 2006. Guidelines will be given to Class Reps as well as lecturers to ensure complete understanding of roles required. This also looks good on the CV for future employers!

Class Reps will attend once-monthly meetings with the Students' Association to ensure a good grounding of understanding all student issues. The meetings are important as this is when major decisions concerning the running of the Association are made - even if you have nothing to bring, you should attend. Meetings are at lunchtime with lunch provided.

If students have no wish to represent their fellow students, but want to bring grievances or important issues to the attention of the Students' Association - they should approach their Class Rep. The Class Rep will inform the Association who will undertake procedures required.

Noticeboards

There are many noticeboards in the College - these are purely for Student Issues. If anyone wishes to post a notice, they MUST request permission from the Students' Association - these posters will be stamped by the Association and given wall space. Any posters found on the boards without the proper permission will be removed.

Please adhere to these rules, as the boards are an important point of contact for students to be informed about what is happening in the College.
